Le genre Calothris appartient aux Cyanobactéries et se caractérise par des trichomes comportant un hétérocyste à leur base, l'autre extrémité se terminant par un poil articulé incolore :

Les cellules végétatives sont le plus souvent plus larges que longues :
Largeur des trichomes : 7-9.3-14.4-11.4 µm

Quelques trichomes présentent des ramifications. Ces ramifications, ici rares, portent un hétérocyste à leur base :

Le genre Calothrix est une espèce marine et d'eau douce .
Il a été observé après expression de lentilles d'eau où elles vivaient entremêlées dans leurs radicelles.
